Villa Park police helped capture burglary suspects Oct. 29 after a pre-dawn chase that started at an Addison gaming cafe and ended in a crash on Interstate 290.
Addison detectives had been conducting surveillance on gaming businesses along Lake Street because of a string of recent commercial burglaries, according to ABC 7 Chicago. Around 4:30 a.m., officers spotted a Dodge Durango without license plates and a BMW pull into the parking lot of Maria's Gaming Cafe at 40 E. Lake St. in Addison, police said.
Detectives watched several people force their way inside and burglarize the cafe before fleeing in both vehicles, according to Addison police.
Officers deployed spike strips on Lake Street, disabling the BMW. Both vehicles continued east before the BMW's occupants abandoned that car and piled into the Durango, Fox 32 Chicago reported.
Villa Park police then located the Durango near North Avenue and Route 83. Officers tried to stop the SUV, but the driver kept going, according to Villa Park police. With help from surrounding agencies, a second tire deflation device was deployed.
The Durango crashed near I-290 and 25th Avenue. Seven people fled on foot, Villa Park police said.
Officers from multiple agencies fanned out to search. Illinois State Police temporarily closed the expressway during the pursuit, ABC 7 reported.
How many arrested?
Villa Park police initially said five people were taken into custody. CBS News Chicago later reported that police revised the number to four. ABC 7, Fox 32 and WGN-TV each reported five arrests. The exact number had not been publicly reconciled as of Oct. 30.
Police recovered multiple firearms and proceeds believed to be connected to the burglary from the crashed vehicle, according to Villa Park police. Both the Durango and the BMW were confirmed stolen, Addison police said.
No officers were injured. No other injuries were reported.
Cafe owner speaks out
The burglary was the second at Maria's Gaming Cafe since May, ABC 7 reported. Owner Tony Maranto told ABC 7 the intruders damaged the entrance and targeted most of the cafe's six gaming machines.
"They broke the door, front door, broke the glass, came in and got into the machines, got into five of the machines," Maranto said, according to ABC 7.
Maranto credited Addison detectives for the stakeout that led to the arrests. Most of the cafe's gaming machines remained out of service as the business cleaned up the damage, ABC 7 reported.
Traffic impact and what's next
The crash blocked multiple eastbound lanes on I-290 near 25th Avenue and caused heavy delays for the morning commute into Chicago. Illinois State Police said all lanes reopened around 6:05 a.m., Fox 32 reported.
The Addison Police Department is leading the investigation. Charges were pending as of Oct. 29, according to ABC 7. The department said it would release more details when possible.
