Elmhurst residents needing in-person police services will head to a new address starting Friday, Oct. 30.
The Elmhurst Police Department will move operations to a temporary station at 180 W. Park Ave. at 6 p.m. that day, the city said in a press release. The shift clears the way for construction of a new police headquarters at the department's current site, 125 E. First St.
Police services will continue without interruption during the move, the city said. Residents should still call 911 for emergencies and the department's non-emergency line for other police assistance.
The department expects to operate from the temporary location for about 20 months while the new facility is built.
What's being built
The Elmhurst City Council approved the exterior design for the new station earlier this year following public meetings, community open houses and review by city commissions, according to the press release.
The current station is about 35 years old, according to Patch. The city concluded it was not worth renovating, Patch reported in March 2026.
The replacement will be a two-story, 54,000-square-foot building. Police Chief Michael McLean told a City Council zoning committee in July that the rectangular design will extend to First Street, Patch reported. The zoning panel unanimously approved the plan.
"This is a good project that needs to be done," Alderman Chris Jensen said at the committee meeting, Patch reported.
Cost and funding
The demolition and rebuilding are expected to cost $48 million, according to Patch. The city plans to pay through a combination of property and hotel tax increases, the sale of a city building and capacity freed by debt rolling off the city's books.
In March 2026, the City Council voted unanimously for an $11 million bond issue. Of that, $3.5 million went toward the building's engineering. The bond auction drew 28 bids from nine bidders, with JP Morgan Securities winning at 2.4 percent. The city had expected a rate of 3.2 percent, Alderwoman Noel Talluto said, according to Patch.
