A Minneapolis woman accused of leading an Elmhurst police officer on an 82-mph chase will remain in jail until her next court date.
DuPage County Judge Joshua Dieden granted the state's motion to detain Arterria Lipsey, 32, pre-trial after she was charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding, a Class 4 felony. Lipsey also faces one count of burglary, a Class 2 felony, one count of retail theft, a Class 3 felony, and multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses. The charges were announced by DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin and Elmhurst Police Chief Michael McLean, as first reported by DuPage Community News.
The case stems from an Oct. 19 incident at the Alo Yoga store at 19 W. Jefferson Ave. in Naperville. Naperville police responded to a burglary and retail theft call there at about 7:15 p.m. Prosecutors allege Lipsey and Shataya Connor, 28, of Chicago, entered the store, selected clothing with an approximate retail value of $1,694 and left without paying.
Shortly after, an Elmhurst police officer spotted the two women traveling eastbound on Interstate 290 in a black Dodge Durango driven by Lipsey. When the officer activated emergency lights and siren, Lipsey allegedly fled, reaching speeds of about 82 mph, according to the announcement.
The Elmhurst officer initially terminated the pursuit. He then rejoined after the Hillside Police Department picked up the chase. It ended on southbound Interstate 294 when the Durango drove over spike strips deployed by the Oak Brook Police Department. Lipsey was taken into custody at that time.
Berlin said in a statement that the case was "particularly upsetting" because Lipsey allegedly "led police on a dangerous high-speed chase, putting the officers involved and countless innocent motorists at great risk."
McLean praised the multi-agency effort, saying the coordinated response "brought this pursuit to a safe conclusion." He attributed the outcome to cooperation among departments and strong prosecution from Berlin's office.
Connor, who is charged with one count each of burglary and retail theft, was released on her own recognizance on Oct. 20. Her next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 10.
Lipsey's next court appearance is Nov. 16.
