Four Chicago men now face felony armed violence and machine gun charges. Prosecutors say they smashed into an Addison gaming café Oct. 29 and fled through Elmhurst and Villa Park at speeds topping 100 mph.
A DuPage County judge on Oct. 30 ordered all four held in custody until their next court appearance, according to a DuPage County State's Attorney's Office news release reported by Shaw Local's My Suburban Life. As we reported Oct. 30, the chase ended with four arrests near Interstate 290.
The suspects are Keonte Adams, 20; Dajuan Johnson, 24; Kyronte McCondichie, 20; and Daryl Nesbit, 19. Each is charged with armed violence, unlawful possession of a weapon classified as a machine gun, burglary, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, criminal damage to property and aggravated fleeing and eluding, according to the release.
What prosecutors allege
Addison police and other DuPage County agencies were running a stakeout operation on Oct. 29 in response to a string of gaming-establishment burglaries, prosecutors said. Around 4:32 a.m., officers spotted a black Dodge Durango and a white BMW, both reported stolen, traveling together on Lake Street.
About five minutes later, both vehicles backed into parking spots at Maria's Gaming Café, 40 E. Lake St. in Addison. Prosecutors alleged five people, four of them armed, broke in using sledgehammers and a crowbar. The group spent about two minutes inside, smashing gaming machines and removing cash boxes holding $13,847, according to the release.
Chase through Elmhurst and Villa Park
As the group fled, the BMW hit spike strips. Its three occupants abandoned the car and piled into the Durango, which then held eight people, authorities said.
Elmhurst police tried to stop the Durango at Lake Street and Route 83, prosecutors alleged. The driver kept going on Route 83 to North Avenue, where Villa Park police joined the pursuit. The Durango exceeded 100 mph on North Avenue before a second set of spike strips disabled it near the Eisenhower Expressway and 25th Avenue, authorities said.
All eight occupants fled on foot across I-290 into a Bellwood neighborhood. Four were arrested. Officers used K-9 units and drones in the search, according to the release.
Weapons recovered
Officers searching the Durango found a loaded Glock 22 with a device that converts a semi-automatic handgun into a fully automatic firearm, a loaded Glock 17C with a 31-round magazine, a loaded Zastava AK-style firearm, a sledgehammer, a pry bar and a cash box, according to the release. Police also reported seeing two guns and a sledgehammer inside the BMW.
DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in the release that "businesses in our community should not have to operate in fear that their windows will be broken, doors kicked in and, in a moment, their property and livelihood stolen or destroyed by a group of armed individuals who terrorize the community with no regard for the rule of law."
The four defendants are scheduled to appear in court Monday, Nov. 23.
