Two Villa Park businesses are shut down after a fire burned through the roof insulation of their shared building at 1021 W. North Ave. on Friday, Oct. 30.
The Villa Park Fire Department responded at approximately 9:31 a.m. after a business occupant reported smelling smoke and noticing that smoke was beginning to fill the unit, according to a Village of Villa Park civic alert published Monday, Nov. 2.
Villa Park Engine 82 arrived to find light smoke conditions. Firefighters traced the source to the rear roofline and discovered a smoldering fire within the insulation layer of the building's membrane roofing system.
Crews removed sections of the roofing membrane to expose the affected area and extinguish the fire. The blaze spread across two business units. Both units also sustained minor water damage from firefighting operations.
The Village of Villa Park Community Development Department assessed the building and deemed both units uninhabitable until repairs are completed. Building management was also notified. The village did not identify the affected businesses.
The Villa Park Fire Department's Fire Investigation Unit responded to the scene. The cause remains under investigation after a preliminary investigation.
Five fire departments assisted Villa Park: the Elmhurst, Lombard, Addison, Oak Brook Terrace and York Center fire departments. The Villa Park Police Department also responded.
