Elmhurst's first Citywide Garage Sale opens driveways across town on Saturday, Oct. 3, and Sunday, Oct. 4, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Residents who registered for the pilot program will have their homes listed on an official participant map the city plans to publish before the event. Registration was free, and participation does not count toward the city's annual garage sale limit. No permit is required.

The Public Affairs & Safety Committee approved the program unanimously on June 22. Communications Director Michael Queroz told the committee the city would also allow residents who had already hosted two garage sales this year to take part, according to committee minutes.

The registration deadline closed Sept. 11. The city has said it will evaluate the program after the event.

The garage sale shares the Oct. 3 calendar with the Elmhurst Park District's Family FallFest, running 9 a.m. to noon at Wild Meadows Trace, 511 S. York, with Safety Town trick-or-treating, food trucks and fall activities.

WWII documentary premieres at York Theatre

The Elmhurst Veterans Commission brings the Illinois premiere of the documentary "10 Good Men" to Classic Cinemas York Theatre, 150 N. York St., on Wednesday, Sept. 23. Screenings are at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., each followed by a live Q&A with director Trent "TJ" Jones.

The 90-minute film preserves the firsthand combat stories of 10 of the last remaining World War II veterans who flew the B-17 Flying Fortress. It features restored and colorized archive footage and Emmy Award-winning narrator Dan Nachtrab. The screening is co-hosted by the American 250 Working Group, with support from the City of Elmhurst and American Legion Post 187.

"These men represent the final voices of a generation that is quickly leaving us," Jones told the Elmhurst Independent in a Sept. 11 article. "Our goal with 10 Good Men was to honor their service with the highest production quality possible."

It is the first feature film from TJ3 Productions, the company behind Jones's TJ3 History YouTube channel.

Sunday, Oct. 4: The Elmhurst Symphony Orchestra performs "Heroes and Villains" from 3-5 p.m. at Elmhurst Christian Reformed Church, 149 W. Brush Hill. Tickets are $35-$45 with student and senior discounts.

Monday, Oct. 5: The Elmhurst Public Library hosts a free program on aviator Bessie Coleman, 7-8 p.m., in person and on Zoom. Coleman is portrayed by her great-niece Gigi Coleman.
