The splash pad at Lufkin Park in Villa Park is closed indefinitely after a power outage knocked out water and electricity at the facility, the Village of Villa Park announced Wednesday, July 29.

No timeline has been set.

The closure comes as the area recovers from severe storms that struck Monday, July 27, bringing a 102°F heat index and cutting power to 62,000 customers across Elmhurst and Villa Park. As we reported Wednesday, Monday's storms hit those two communities hardest. The village has not confirmed whether the Lufkin Park outage is storm-related.

The village's civic alert says the splash pad will remain closed "until further notice" and that updates will follow once power is restored and normal operations resume.

Lufkin Park, at 1000 S. Ardmore Ave., is a popular free amenity that was renovated in 2024 with a new splash pad, inclusive playground, ninja course, and sensory features. The splash pad normally runs 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily through September, according to park listings.

A Picture Book Picnic event, presented in partnership with the Villa Park Public Library, was scheduled at Lufkin Park for 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. No cancellation notice had been posted as of publication, but the loss of water and electricity at the park raises questions about whether the event proceeded as planned.

Residents can monitor invillapark.com for restoration updates. During heat events, the Villa Park Police Department and the Villa Park Public Library serve as cooling centers.
