The LA Fitness at 620 N. York St. in Elmhurst closed in late August as parent company Fitness International began converting the gym into Club Studio, its higher-end brand, in a renovation estimated at $3 million.

Club Studio has no Illinois locations yet. The Elmhurst conversion is one of several planned in the state, with locations also in the works for Wilmette and three Chicago neighborhoods, Patch reported. The chain has 26 locations nationwide, concentrated on the East and West coasts, according to the Club Studio website.

Elmhurst city records showed Fitness International's plan to convert the York Street fitness center, with the project estimated at nearly $3 million, according to Patch reporter David Giuliani. The city had issued a building permit for the work earlier in 2026.

The conversion did not follow a straight line. In mid-July, LA Fitness employees told Patch the conversion was no longer in the works. By Aug. 23, the gym was closed anyway. A sign on the front door listed Aug. 27 as the closure date, four days after the reported shutdown. Patch's reporting did not explain the gap between the two dates.

Club Studio is a "premium subsidiary" of Fitness International, the company that also operates LA Fitness. Memberships cost more, but Club Studio members get unlimited access to all LA Fitness locations. The reverse is not true: LA Fitness members cannot use Club Studio facilities.

No specific membership pricing for the Elmhurst location has been announced. No reopening date or construction timeline has been made public. Patch reported leaving a message with LA Fitness' public relations department in July; no corporate statement appeared in the October reporting.

For Elmhurst residents who used the York Street gym, the nearest LA Fitness is at 1421 W. Lake St. in Addison, about eight miles away.

The Club Studio brand offers boutique studio classes including cycling, boxing, reformer Pilates, yoga and trampoline workouts, along with recovery services such as cryotherapy and compression therapy, according to its website.
