Drivers who use I-355 to reach Elmhurst, Villa Park and Oakbrook Terrace face overnight ramp closures at nine interchanges through the fall, the Illinois Tollway announced in an Oct. 28 press release.
The closures allow crews to repair pavement and let new concrete cure along the Veterans Memorial Tollway between I-80 and Army Trail Road in Will, Cook and DuPage counties. Delays are expected, the Tollway said.
Where ramps will close without detours
Multiple ramps at these I-355 interchanges will shut down between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. throughout the fall:
- Maple Avenue
- Boughton Road
- 75th Street
- 63rd Street
- Ogden Avenue (U.S. Route 34)
- Butterfield Road (Illinois Route 53)
- Roosevelt Road (Illinois Route 38)
- North Avenue (Illinois Route 64)
- Army Trail Road
No detours will be posted for these closures. The ramp connecting Ogden Avenue to eastbound I-88 will also close without a detour as part of the same work.
Interchange closures with detours
Six ramps connecting I-355 to I-55 and I-88 will close between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. with posted detours:
- Northbound I-355 to southbound I-55
- Southbound I-355 to northbound I-55
- Northbound I-355 to eastbound I-88
- Westbound I-88 to southbound I-355
- Westbound I-88 to northbound I-355
- Southbound I-355 to eastbound I-88
When the I-355-to-I-88 ramps close, detour signs will route traffic to westbound I-88 through the Route 53 interchange and back onto eastbound I-88, according to the Tollway.
Broader project and timeline
The ramp work is part of a larger repair effort on I-355 that includes bridge repairs, CCTV camera installation, sign replacement, lighting repairs, drainage improvements and pavement marking. The Tollway's press release states repair work is scheduled to continue into 2027. The agency's project page for the I-355 work, updated Nov. 2, says 2026 work "is scheduled to be complete by the end of the year."
All scheduling depends on weather.
The project falls under the Tollway's seven-year, $2 billion Bridging the Future capital plan, which the Tollway Board of Directors approved in December 2024. That plan bridges the gap between the agency's $15 billion Move Illinois program and its $26.5 billion Driving Connections long-term capital program, according to the Tollway.
Construction-zone speed limits are in effect around the clock. Electronic message signs will alert drivers to closures and changing traffic patterns. The Tollway posts daily closure updates on its website at illinoistollway.com.
Shaw Local first reported on the closures Oct. 31.
