Drivers on Villa Park roads face continued heightened enforcement through the end of July after police issued 128 citations and made five arrests during an 18-day Fourth of July traffic crackdown that wrapped up Monday, July 6.
The department's next campaign is already underway. A statewide speed enforcement effort launched Tuesday, July 7, and runs through Friday, July 31, according to a Villa Park Police news release.
Holiday enforcement by the numbers
Villa Park officers wrote 90 seat belt citations, nine distracted driving citations, six speeding citations, and 23 other citations between Friday, June 19, and Monday, July 6, the department announced Tuesday, July 7. Officers also made three traffic-related arrests and two criminal arrests during the same period.
The holiday campaign combined "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" and "Click It or Ticket" enforcement. Villa Park joined more than 200 state and local law enforcement agencies in the effort, which was funded with federal highway safety dollars administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation and supported by the Illinois State Police.

Speed campaign now active
The new Illinois Speed Enforcement campaign shifts the focus from impaired and unbuckled drivers to speeders. Villa Park Police are again joining more than 200 local police and sheriff's departments statewide for the effort, which also receives federal highway safety funding through IDOT. The campaign is part of IDOT's statewide "It's Not a Game" safety initiative.
