An Elmhurst police officer helped end an 82-mph chase on Interstate 290 on Monday, Oct. 19. Two women had allegedly stolen nearly $1,700 in clothing from a Naperville yoga store, DuPage County prosecutors said.
Arterria Lipsey, 32, of Minneapolis, and Shataya Connor, 28, of Chicago, were arrested and charged with burglary and retail theft, according to a DuPage County State's Attorney's Office news release reported by Patch. Lipsey faces an additional charge of aggravated fleeing and eluding, along with multiple misdemeanor and petty traffic offenses, Shaw Local reported.
Naperville police responded to the Alo Yoga store at 19 W. Jefferson Ave. about 7:15 p.m. after the two women allegedly entered, selected about $1,694 in merchandise and left without paying, authorities said.
Shortly after, an Elmhurst officer spotted the pair traveling eastbound on I-290 in a black Dodge Durango driven by Lipsey, according to prosecutors. When the officer activated emergency lights and a siren, Lipsey allegedly did not stop. She fled, reaching speeds of 82 mph.
The Elmhurst officer ended the pursuit.
Hillside police then picked up the chase, and the Elmhurst officer later rejoined it, prosecutors said. The pursuit stretched across two interstates and involved officers from Elmhurst, Hillside and Oak Brook.
It ended on southbound Interstate 294 after the Durango drove over spike strips deployed by Oak Brook police. Lipsey was taken into custody.
No innocent motorists were injured during the chase, according to DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin. In a news release, Berlin called the pursuit dangerous, saying Lipsey "led police on a dangerous high-speed chase, putting the officers involved and countless innocent motorists at great risk."
Lipsey is charged with one count each of aggravated fleeing and eluding, burglary and retail theft, plus the traffic offenses. A DuPage County judge ordered her held in jail until her next court appearance on Nov. 16.
Connor was released on her own recognizance on Tuesday, Oct. 20. Her next court appearance is set for Nov. 10.
