Drivers who use Medinah Road near Lake Street will need to find another way through the end of the week.

The DuPage County Sheriff's Office closed northbound Medinah Road just north of Lake Street on Monday, Sept. 21, for the Presidents Cup at Medinah Country Club. The closure affects a key north-south route roughly five miles northwest of downtown Elmhurst, and the sheriff's office is urging all motorists to avoid Medinah Road and plan alternate routes.

In a traffic advisory posted Sunday, Sept. 20, the sheriff's office initially said the closure would run through Sept. 28. A follow-up advisory on Tuesday, Sept. 22, updated the end date to Sunday, Sept. 27. Drivers who saw the original notice should plan accordingly. The agency did not name a specific detour in either advisory.

Heavy traffic is expected throughout the area for the duration of the event. The sheriff's office also announced it is deploying unmanned aerial drones for public safety and security operations daily through Monday, Sept. 28.

The Presidents Cup, an international golf competition between U.S. and international teams, runs Thursday, Sept. 24, through Sunday at Medinah Country Club. It is the first Presidents Cup held in the Chicago area, according to Axios Chicago. The club previously hosted the 2012 Ryder Cup.

Elmhurst-area residents heading to the event or simply trying to get around the closure have a transit option. Metra is running extra trains on its Milwaukee District West Line between Chicago Union Station and Medinah Station through the end of the tournament.

On weekdays, two additional outbound morning trains and two additional inbound evening trains are scheduled. Weekend service includes several extra trains, some running express between Medinah and Western Avenue.

Event organizers are providing free shuttle service between Medinah Station and the Presidents Cup west entrance. Metra offers a $7 day pass for Saturday or Sunday travel and a $10 weekend pass for both days, available through the Ventra app.

The closure runs through Sunday, according to the sheriff's office, and no further traffic advisories had been issued as of Tuesday afternoon.
