York's five-game winning streak meets its toughest test Saturday when the Dukes travel to Wilmette to face No. 3 Loyola in the IHSA Class 8A second round.
Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. Nov. 7.
The No. 19 Dukes (8-3) rolled past Downers Grove South 42-14 in the first round. Chris Georgas rushed for 115 yards and three touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Zack Assaad, according to Shaw Local's second-round preview. Assaad completed 13 of 18 passes for 217 yards. Colton Heilig hauled in five catches for 86 yards, Jake Tinch caught a 60-yard touchdown and Will Bute broke a 49-yard touchdown run.
York took second in the West Suburban Silver and reached the second round after consecutive playoff wins over Bloom Township and Downers Grove South. The Dukes started the season 3-3 before reeling off five straight victories, according to Shaw Local's CCL storylines report.
The Ramblers (9-1) present a familiar obstacle. Loyola eliminated York in three consecutive postseasons: 30-3 in the 2022 Class 8A semifinals, 23-14 in the 2023 semifinals and 35-14 in the 2024 state championship game. The two programs did not meet in the 2025 playoffs, when both were knocked out in the first round.
Loyola opened this year's postseason with a 41-0 shutout of Minooka. Junior quarterback Matthew Lee threw for 183 yards and three touchdowns in that win. Lee, who holds offers from Wisconsin and Minnesota, runs an offense that has topped 30 points in eight games this season. Head coach John Holecek, who led Loyola to three state titles and three runner-up finishes from 2006 to 2023, is back on the sideline this fall.
Senior linebacker Will Mettee and senior tight end Charlie Fowler are both committed to Boston College. Junior tight end Jordan McKinley holds 26 college offers.
On York's side, senior linebacker Tommy Hosler has been the Dukes' leading tackler the past two seasons. In coverage published in October, Hosler told Shaw Local he felt the team's momentum building heading into the playoffs.
York coach Don Gelsomino echoed that confidence after the Bloom Township win. In DuPage Community News coverage published Oct. 29, Gelsomino said, "We're playing good football. We want to keep rolling as long as we can."
The winner advances to face the winner of No. 11 St. Ignatius (8-2) at No. 6 Maine South (9-1).
