Elmhurst families expecting a baby can attend free bilingual childbirth classes starting Tuesday, August 4, at the Linda A. Kurzawa Community Center in Wheaton. A DuPage County Health Department doula will teach the six-week series in both English and Spanish.

The classes run every Tuesday through September 8, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., at the center's location at 117 N. County Farm Road on the DuPage County Government Center campus.

The DCHD announced the series on Sunday, July 26, on its official X account. Participants can register by scanning a QR code included in the post; after registering, the doula will send a Zoom link, suggesting a virtual attendance option may also be available.

Elmhurst's Spanish-speaking families

About 2,461 Elmhurst residents speak Spanish at home, according to the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning's Community Data Snapshot, which draws on 2019–2023 American Community Survey estimates. Roughly 1,799 of those residents report speaking English less than "very well."

Elmhurst's Hispanic and Latino population has more than doubled as a share of the city's total since 2000, growing from 4% to about 10.1% in the most recent five-year census period, according to CMAP data. U.S. Census Bureau QuickFacts put the city's population at 46,111 as of July 2025, with 6% of residents under age 5.

The DCHD's doula services program provides birth support free of charge to qualifying DuPage County residents and already offers materials in English and Spanish, according to the department's website. The department also runs a separate Better Birth Outcomes–Comprehensive program that pairs residents with a registered nurse for one-on-one support during pregnancy and after delivery, also at no cost.
