An Elmhurst police squad car ended a dangerous multi-county chase early Monday, July 27, blocking a silver GMC Canyon pickup whose driver had already rammed police vehicles from Addison to Villa Park while allegedly driving drunk at speeds topping 90 mph.
Luis Robles Carrillo, 28, of the 0-100 block of Armitage Avenue in Glendale Heights, now faces a Class 2 felony aggravated DUI charge, two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding, three counts of criminal damage to government-supported property, and driving while license suspended for a fourth-to-ninth offense, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. Judge Joshua Dieden ordered Robles Carrillo held without pretrial release on Tuesday, July 28.
The incident began around 12:46 a.m. Monday when multiple people in the Jewel-Osco parking lot at 100 W. Lake St. in Addison flagged down an officer and pointed out the GMC. When officers tried to stop Robles Carrillo, he allegedly reversed into a squad car, then sped south on Lincoln Avenue and west on Lake Street at more than 90 mph in a 45 mph zone.
Addison officers chased the truck about five miles before losing sight of it on westbound North Avenue. They located the GMC parked at Robles Carrillo's residence. When an officer positioned a squad car in front of the truck, Robles Carrillo allegedly reversed onto the parkway and fled westbound on Armitage Avenue, triggering a second pursuit.
He did not stop.
DuPage County Sheriff's deputies spotted the GMC traveling eastbound near Villa Avenue and North Avenue. An Elmhurst Police Department squad car then blocked the front of the truck. Robles Carrillo allegedly struck the Elmhurst cruiser, shifted into reverse, and hit a Villa Park Police Department squad car before officers pinned the vehicle and took him into custody.
Officers reported Robles Carrillo's eyes were red and bloodshot and detected a strong odor of alcohol on his breath. One officer sought medical attention for shoulder pain after his squad car was struck, Fox 32 Chicago reported.
"The allegations that with complete disregard for public safety, Mr. Robles Carrillo not only led police on multiple high-speed chases, but did so after he had been drinking, are outrageous," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement Tuesday, July 28.
Addison Chief of Police Roy Selvik said in a statement Tuesday, July 28, that Robles Carrillo's actions placed both officers and the community at risk. Selvik thanked Elmhurst, Villa Park, and DuPage County Sheriff's Office personnel for helping end the pursuit before anyone was seriously injured.
Robles Carrillo is due back in court Monday, August 24, before Judge Brian Telander.
Shed fire spreads to garage on South Kirk Avenue
Separately, Elmhurst firefighters responded to a shed fire on South Kirk Avenue that spread to a nearby garage around Monday, July 27, according to a Patch roundup of Elmhurst police incidents. No specific address, cause, or damage estimate has been released. The Elmhurst Beacon has requested additional details from the Elmhurst Fire Department.
