A driver fleeing a Villa Park traffic stop near Route 83 and St. Charles Road reached 107 mph in a 55-mph zone Sunday evening before crashing into a guardrail on Interstate 290, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office. A loaded Glock with a 28-round extended magazine was found on the driver's seat, and a juvenile was among the five people in the car.

Don Williams Jr., 20, of the 1100 block of S. Hamilton Avenue in Chicago, was ordered detained pretrial Tuesday, Aug. 18, after DuPage County Judge Joshua Dieden granted the state's motion for pretrial detention. Williams faces one count of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, one count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and one count of aggravated fleeing and eluding.

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin and Villa Park Chief of Police Todd Kubish announced the charges Tuesday.

The chase began around 7:45 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, when Villa Park officers tried to pull over a vehicle near Route 83 and St. Charles Road. The car was suspected of involvement in a previous felony and had been spotted with illegally tinted windows and a driver making improper lane changes, according to the state's attorney's office.

The car initially pulled over. But when the officer stepped out of his squad car, the vehicle sped away.

Williams allegedly pushed the car past 107 mph at Roosevelt Road and York Street before entering eastbound I-290. Oak Brook police deployed spike strips on the expressway, deflating two tires. Williams continued at 65 to 70 mph on the flattened tires before crashing into a guardrail, prosecutors said.

After the crash, Williams and four other occupants fled on foot. Officers arrested Williams following a brief foot pursuit. All five people in the vehicle were eventually apprehended with assistance from the Elmhurst, Hillside, Darien and Wood Dale police departments, including K-9 units from Darien and Wood Dale.

Officers processing the car found the loaded Glock with its extended magazine on the driver's seat and a second extended magazine on the backseat.

No injuries were reported during the pursuit or crash.

Kubish said in a statement that Williams, described by prosecutors as a convicted felon, allegedly drove at speeds reaching 107 mph with a juvenile and other passengers inside the vehicle, endangering the public, responding officers and the passengers themselves. Berlin said his office would prosecute the weapons charges to the fullest extent of the law, adding that DuPage County law enforcement has zero tolerance for those who endanger the public trying to outrun police.

Williams' next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 14 before Judge Ann Celine O'Hallaren Walsh.

The incident marks the second high-speed chase involving Villa Park-area roads in recent weeks. On July 27, an Elmhurst squad car ended a multi-county DUI chase after a driver rammed police vehicles at 90 mph.
