York Community High School raised $15,130 from 302 donors through its second annual Cool School Plunge this winter, and District 205 Superintendent Keisha Campbell spotlighted the achievement on Thursday, July 9, calling it an example of student leadership and community action in an Instagram post.

The total ranked York among the top fundraisers in a statewide program that included 56 school plunges in 2026, according to the Special Olympics Illinois Polar Plunge leaderboard.

The Cool School Challenge is part of the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run Polar Plunge. Schools host on-campus plunges where each registered participant must raise a minimum of $100. The funds support Special Olympics Illinois programming for more than 18,000 athletes statewide. At the $100 level, a donation sends one athlete to the State Basketball Tournament; $1,000 sends a Unified Team to a State Championship, according to the organization's fundraising toolkit.

Down from inaugural year

The $15,130 total represents a decline from York's inaugural Cool School Plunge on Friday, Feb. 23, 2024, when 47 participants raised more than $25,000, the highest amount among 18 participating schools that year, according to a York Community High School press release. The number of participants in the 2026 event has not been reported.

Steve Westendorf, York's Special Olympics coordinator as of the 2024 event, said at the time that the challenge was "a chance to support all of our incredibly talented athletes while also providing an exciting, and certainly memorable, way to give back."

York has 25 students who participate in Special Olympics sports including basketball, volleyball, and track and field, per the 2024 press release. The district has not confirmed the current roster size for 2026.

Statewide context

The district first announced the 2026 fundraising results on April 16. Campbell's July 9 post revisited the achievement as a "Throwback Thursday" highlight on both the @Elmhurst205Supt and @ElmhurstD205 accounts on X.

The statewide top fundraiser in 2026 was Helen Keller Junior High School, which raised $59,726, surpassing its $50,000 goal by 19%, according to the Polar Plunge leaderboard.
