York's varsity boys soccer team lost its West Suburban Conference Silver Division opener 3-1 to Lyons Township on Tuesday, Sept. 8, at home.

The Dukes entered the match at 0-3-1 on the season. Lyons Township came in at 3-0-1, according to a Chicagoland Soccer preview published the morning of the game. The Lions finished last season 18-4-2 and returned 13 players from that roster, per Shaw Local's preseason preview.

York coach Jordan Stopka had predicted a bumpy start. In Shaw Local's Aug. 27 season preview, Stopka said the early going would be "… tough sledding for this team as they have an extremely difficult schedule and nine sophomores on the roster."

Through four games, York had yet to win. The Dukes opened Monday, Aug. 24, at St. Patrick, then faced Libertyville, Lane Tech and Naperville North before conference play began. York went 9-9-1 a year ago and returns senior midfielder Patrick Nazar, senior midfielder and defender Jacob Roubitchek, and senior forward Cole Shearer. Roubitchek holds multiple college offers, according to Shaw Local.

Nine sophomores made the varsity roster this fall, including Will Roubitchek, Jair Hernandez and Benjamin Flores.

Lyons Township coach Paul Labbato entered the season with high expectations. He told Shaw Local in the Aug. 27 preview that his team was working hard toward a deep playoff run. Seniors Ari Chen, Hayden McTigue, Julian Avdiu and Cormac Moran anchor a deep returning group.

York's JV squad picked up a 1-0 victory in the earlier game Tuesday.
