Milagro Ramirez won a state championship. Elijah Campbell and Amanda Vega each earned silver. Six Willowbrook High School athletes medaled at the 2026 Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games, held June 12–13 at Illinois State University in Normal.

The Villa Park school sent nine student-athletes to the state competition after a sendoff celebration on Thursday, June 11, according to the Willowbrook Athletics department.

Ramirez's gold in the 100-meter Walk was the only first-place finish among Willowbrook's nine Special Olympics competitors. Campbell and Vega both placed second in the Standing Long Jump on Friday, June 12. Juan Reyes earned second place in the Mini Javelin Throw on Saturday, June 13.

Two more Warriors came home with bronze: Aidan Schwarz placed third in the Tennis Ball Throw, and Kosti Vasili finished third in the 200-meter Dash. Three other Willowbrook athletes competed but did not medal.

The six medals add to a 2025-26 school year in which Willowbrook qualified athletes for state competition in more than a dozen sports, including girls wrestling for the first time in school history, according to a year-end letter from District 88 Superintendent Dr. Jean Barbanente.

Ramirez's state title is the program's first individual gold at the Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games this school year.
