Runners and residents near the Illinois Prairie Path now have a much clearer picture of the man Elmhurst police say sexually battered a woman on the trail Friday, Aug. 21.

The Elmhurst Police Department, led by Chief Michael McLean, on Sunday, Aug. 23, released additional photos of the suspect after detectives canvassing the area determined he visited a nearby business before the attack, according to a Patch report on the police news release. The business was not named.

The new images allowed police to sharpen the suspect's description significantly. He is now identified as a Hispanic man in his late 20s or early 30s wearing a red Aeropostale "NY 86" Statue of Liberty T-shirt, light-colored cargo shorts, green Crocs shoes and a black Chicago Bulls cap. He left the scene on a black Segway brand electric scooter with its headlight on, heading west on Vallette Street from York Street.

That level of detail marks a jump from the original Friday night alert, which described only a Hispanic man in his 30s in a red shirt, light-colored cargo shorts and a black cap.

The assault was reported between 8:45 p.m. and 9 p.m. Aug. 21 on the stretch of path between York Street and the Pioneer Park area, a corridor popular with evening runners and cyclists. Police issued a community alert to surrounding neighborhoods that night, asking residents to check home security cameras and call 911 if they spotted the man.

The department posted the updated photos to Facebook on Aug. 23, urging the public to help identify the suspect, according to NBC Chicago. The case has drawn regional attention, with WGN TV News and ABC 7 also broadcasting the images.

No arrest has been made. The investigation remains open as of Monday, Aug. 24.
