Jacob Wipke scored in the 87th minute Saturday, Sept. 5, to rescue a 2-2 draw for Elmhurst University men's soccer against Knox College at Langhorst Field.

The equalizer kept the Bluejays unbeaten at 1-0-1 heading into a home match against No. 14 Washington University in St. Louis on Monday, Sept. 7, with kickoff at 1 p.m. at Langhorst Field.

Head coach Tim Dean's squad controlled play early. Andrew Walters buried a penalty kick in the fifth minute for a 1-0 lead, and the Bluejays held that advantage through halftime while limiting Knox to five first-half shots.

Knox's Kestervens Dera equalized from the penalty spot in the 55th minute. Santiago Henriques then put the visitors ahead 2-1 in the 85th minute off a Dera assist, and the Bluejays appeared headed for their first loss.

Wipke answered two minutes later. Nikolas Dabic threaded an assist, and Wipke finished to level the match at 2-2, according to the Elmhurst athletics department.

Walters led Elmhurst with four shots. Wipke added three, two of them on frame. Goalkeeper Jakub Wiktorczyk made two saves. The Bluejays outshot Knox 12-11 overall and held a 6-1 edge in corner kicks.

The Bears arrive in Elmhurst carrying a No. 14 national ranking in the United Soccer Coaches Division III preseason poll and a 1-0-1 record of their own. WashU opened with a 5-0 win over Millikin on Sept. 1 before drawing 1-1 at North Park on Saturday, according to WashU athletics.

WashU won the University Athletic Association championship in 2025 and reached the NCAA Division III Sweet 16, Student Life reported. After that Sept. 1 opener, Bears senior goalkeeper Cal L'Hommedieu said the team was looking ahead to its Chicago-area swing: "We have a big two-game stretch in Chicago this weekend, and hopefully we can just keep it going."

Elmhurst plays in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW). Dean took over the program in January 2024 after guiding Lawrence University to two straight Midwest Conference Tournament titles and three NCAA Tournament appearances.
