The Elmhurst Fire Department asked a DuPage County oversight board on Monday, June 1 to approve its access to a GPS tracking platform that would display firefighter locations in real time during emergency responses.

The department's application for CommandCentral Aware, a Motorola Solutions tool, appeared on the DuPage Emergency Telephone System Board Policy Advisory Committee agenda alongside 10 other agencies. The platform shows the GPS coordinates of APX Next portable radios on a shared map alongside active 911 calls and incident data, letting dispatchers and field crews track unit status and location during active incidents.

Five other fire departments — Bloomingdale, Glenside, Itasca, Pleasantview, and West Chicago — and five police departments (Addison, Burr Ridge, Downers Grove, Oak Brook, and West Chicago) were listed on the same agenda item.

The PAC has standing authority to grant access under Resolution ETS-R-0041-26, which the full ETSB adopted May 13 after a unanimous 6-0 PAC recommendation on May 4. That means the PAC vote is the final approval step. ETSB Chair Greg Schwarze signed the resolution.

All 29 DuPage County fire agencies had already been deployed with APX Next radios as of early 2026, according to ETSB Executive Director Linda Zerwin's report at the February 2 PAC meeting.

The June 1 meeting minutes, which would confirm whether the application was approved, have not yet been posted. The PAC next meets Monday, July 6.
