Elmhurst's 12 rebuilt tennis courts at Berens Park will open to the public Tuesday, Sept. 1, the Elmhurst Park District announced Wednesday.

All 12 courts were rebuilt from the ground up.

The $1,643,300 project added new light poles repositioned outside the fence line, a renovated promenade, new chain-link fencing and shade structures, according to the Park District's project page. The adjacent Oaklawn Avenue pathway, closed during construction for safety, was also fully resurfaced.

The reopening comes about six weeks later than the Park District's original July target. Asphalt base installation began June 17, with additional layers and a color coat applied over the summer before crews moved to lamp posts and fencing. The Park District said Wednesday the project is wrapping up, with finishing touches being completed ahead of the Tuesday opening.

The closure forced York Community High School's girls tennis program to hold August tryouts at alternate courts while the rebuild continued. With the Sept. 1 date confirmed, players and recreational users will have the full 12-court complex back before the fall season hits full stride.

Park Board President Kevin Graf said July 23, speaking about the district's broader bond-funded improvement program on the EPD referendum page, "Our residents have been an essential part of this process from the beginning … We are pleased to be able to deliver their vision."

The Park District said a ribbon-cutting ceremony date will be announced soon.
