Roughly 75 officers and firefighters spent all day Thursday, July 23, searching the stone quarry zones near West Avenue for Gabriel De Sagun, a 28-year-old Elmhurst man who has been missing since Monday, July 21.

The searchers used side-scan sonar, an underwater drone, boats, K-9s, and brush-clearing tools to cover both the rocky, foliage-covered terrain and the flooded water retention areas in the east and west quarry zones, Elmhurst police said Thursday night. As of that evening, De Sagun had not been found, and the search is continuing.

How he went missing

A family member dropped De Sagun off at a parking lot on West Avenue on Monday, July 21, to pick up his car, according to Elmhurst police. He never returned home.

Home security video captured De Sagun walking on a sidewalk on West Avenue that same day, police said.

Search escalation

The initial response earlier in the week involved drones, K-9s, a helicopter, and boats along the West Avenue corridor. By Thursday, the operation had grown to include mutual aid agencies, bloodhounds, side-scan sonar, and the underwater drone, with the focus shifting to the quarry zones flanking West Avenue.

Thursday's deployment was the largest single-day operation in the three-day search, with approximately 75 Elmhurst and mutual aid personnel on the ground, police said.

Description

De Sagun is described as Asian, 5-foot-10, with a thin build, black hair, and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a dark blue baseball cap, a dark green and blue shirt, and dark blue jeans.
