York freshman Madison Cotey shot an even-par 73 at the Class 2A Mt. Prospect Sectional on Monday, Oct. 5, finishing second and earning a spot in the IHSA girls golf state finals, Shaw Local reported.
Cotey will compete Friday, Oct. 9, and Saturday, Oct. 10, at Red Tail Run Golf Course in Decatur.
The freshman posted her 73 at Mt. Prospect Golf Club after winning the Class 2A Glen Ellyn Regional with an even-par 70 at Glendale Lakes on Sept. 29. That regional score gave her a two-shot victory and helped York claim the team regional championship with a combined 331. Wheaton North and Wheaton Warrenville South also advanced as teams from that regional.
At sectionals, Cotey was the only York golfer to advance. Fenwick's Mairin Sweeney also earned a state berth with a 76, tying for fifth. Wheaton North's Ariana Savenok shot an 81 to tie for 14th and qualify as an individual.
Cotey has posted top-three individual finishes throughout the fall. At the West Suburban Conference meet at the Village Greens of Woodridge, she finished second individually with a 77, trailing only Hinsdale Central's top scorer. York placed second as a team with a 337, 21 strokes behind conference champion Hinsdale Central's 316.
Her sectional performance also drew attention beyond the course. Suburban Life nominated Cotey as an Athlete of the Week candidate for the week of Oct. 4, alongside Benet's William Comiskey, Wheaton Academy's Owen Coniaris and York football's Chris Georgas.
@YorkAthletics: "Congratulations to the Dukes on a successful season and good luck to freshman Madison Cotey on qualifying for State!"
York High School Athletics posted the message on X after Monday's round.
She will be the lone Duke at Red Tail Run.
