Kelton Hines, an eighth grader at Immaculate Conception in Elmhurst, holds the No. 1 ranking in Illinois for the middle school boys 2-mile run.

Hines posted a time of 10:18.50 at the Granite City Coolidge Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 4. That mark leads the statewide rankings published Oct. 7 by MileSplit Illinois, a prep and youth running database. Illinois Running News confirmed the ranking in its Week 6 cross country standings, also published Oct. 7. Hines held the No. 1 spot for the second consecutive week.

His 10:18.50 sits more than three seconds ahead of No. 2 Brooks Frieburg of Monticello Middle School, who ran 10:21.72. Dane Fleisher of Knoxville is third at 10:24.30.

Immaculate Conception Grade School, at 132 Arthur Street, offers cross country as a no-cut sport beginning in fifth grade, according to a Chicago Parent profile of the school.

Hines is not the only Elmhurst runner near the top of statewide cross country lists this fall. Illinois Running News's Week 6 rankings also place York High School's Karlin Janowski at No. 1 in Class 3A girls and York's Patrick Hill at No. 8 in Class 3A boys.
